Short bio






Jo Ann Oravec (MA, MS, MBA, PhD) is a full professor at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. She is also affiliated with the Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies at UW-Madison. She has written several books and over eighty peer-reviewed articles on computing, management, ethics, public policy, disability studies, and related topics. She was the first chair of the Privacy Council of the State of Wisconsin, the US's first state-level council on information privacy issues. She was a visiting fellow at Oxford and Cambridge.



What Am I working on now?

Good Robot, Bad Robot



I just finished a book on the dark and creepy sides of robotics, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence (for Palgrave Macmillan Springer). These negative dimensions of technology can have powerful impacts on how the technologies are used in practice the negativity can be used in opportunistic ways by developers. "Robo-rage against the machine" can also be a factor as individuals confront these intelligent entities in their daily lives.

Social and Ethical Issues of Computing and AI



I published an article on AI and lie detection in early 2022, and am working on some related lie detection research. I have been publishing in the "computers and society" arena for decades.

My next book, on the "smart home of the future," will be published in 2023. Stay tuned!

Academic Reputation Issues: Metrics Manipulation and Fraud



I have already published several peer-reviewed articles on the topic of the "dark side of academics" (see the image of one of the articles above). I am putting them together into a book manuscript, which I will be sending out to publishers shortly.

My 30-Year Career in University Teaching



My recent university teaching efforts have included Data Visualization, Emerging Technologies, Artificial Intelligence (at UW-Madison), Business Writing, and Business Communications. I've taught remote and hybrid as well as traditional face-to-face classes. I collaborated on modules for a multi-institutional online course on the Internet of Things (IoT).

I started teaching "computers and society" courses in 1983 as an instructor in the Computer Sciences program at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
